The Nagercoil Corporation has initiated a monthly e‑waste collection drive covering all 52 wards of the city. The drive is scheduled on the 15th of every month at both government and private schools and colleges within the corporation limits.

The main aim is to create awareness among the younger generation about safe handling, segregation, collection, and scientific disposal of electronic waste.

Students brought unused and discarded electronic items from their homes, including mobile phones, chargers, computers, keyboards, batteries, and other electronic accessories. Last week’s drive collected more than two tonnes of e‑waste.

Collected e‑waste will be transferred to the Material Recovery Facility at Valampurivilai dumping yard. Once the material reaches a certain volume, the corporation will invite tenders from traders for its sale.

Highlights from last week’s drive include 375 kg from S.T. Hindu College, 175 kg from Pioneer Schools, 59 kg from Sivaram Nursery and Primary School, and 56.5 kg from Government Polytechnic College.

The corporation plans to expand the program further to improve e‑waste management across the entire city.
