Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has released its earnings for the June quarter, showcasing resilience amidst a complex global macroeconomic landscape. The IT giant reported revenue of $7.6 billion, representing a 2.7% year-on-year increase. While the growth appears modest, it reflects a cautious approach from global enterprises as they navigate rapid technological shifts and economic uncertainty.
Margin Pressures and Legal Headwinds
The company's consolidated net profit witnessed a sequential decline of 2.7%. This dip is largely attributed to a one-time charge of Rs 668 crore following a legal setback in the DXC Technology trade secrets lawsuit. Furthermore, operating margins contracted by 130 basis points to 24%, primarily driven by annual salary revisions. CFO Samir Seksaria noted that while wage hikes impact the first quarter, the company remains committed to its target of returning to 25% operating margins later in the fiscal year.
A Major Turnaround in Hiring
In a significant move that defies the broader industry trend of cautious hiring, TCS added 9,279 employees this quarter—the highest net addition in nearly four years. This expansion brings the total headcount to 593,798. The company also demonstrated its commitment to fresh talent by onboarding approximately 14,000 campus graduates, signaling confidence in long-term demand.
The AI Paradigm: Evolution Over Elimination
Addressing the growing anxiety regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI) replacing white-collar jobs, TCS CEO K Krithivasan offered a visionary perspective. Rather than viewing AI as a threat to employment, he characterized it as an evolutionary force. He emphasized that the workforce will shift toward specialized roles such as prompt engineering, model training, testing, and AI governance. According to TCS, the integration of AI will create new categories of work, requiring a talent pool that is adept at managing and overseeing automated lifecycles.
