After a nationwide retest, NEET‑UG 2026 recorded a sharp rise in top scores. Aryan Gupta of Punjab topped the exam with 715 marks, while 19 candidates crossed the 700‑point threshold. Women made up over 58% of the qualified candidates this year.

मुख्य बिंदु (Key Takeaways)

  • Punjab's Aryan Gupta secured the highest score of 715.
  • Nineteen candidates surpassed 700 marks, marking a historic jump.
  • First‑time test‑takers accounted for 93% of those scoring above 690, and women represented 58% of qualifiers.

The release of NEET‑UG 2026 results has set a new benchmark for medical admissions across India. Following allegations of a paper leak, the National Testing Agency (NTA) conducted a retest on June 21 at 5,440 centres, involving nearly 20 lakh candidates. The outcomes not only pushed the top scores higher but also highlighted the performance of first‑time examinees.

Background and Impact of the Retest

The original examination scheduled for May 3 was cancelled on May 12 after concerns surfaced that the question paper had been compromised. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) launched a probe, and a fresh test was organised. Despite the tougher paper, the highest marks rose to 715 – a 29‑point increase over the 2025 topper’s 686.

Score Distribution and Demographics

A total of 1,492 candidates scored 650 or above, 10,160 crossed the 600‑mark mark, and 90,780 secured at least 500 points. Notably, 138 candidates achieved scores above 690; 93% of them were appearing for NEET for the first time, and 99% fell in the 17‑19 age bracket. Women constituted 58% of the 11.2 lakh qualifiers, with a 57% pass rate compared to 55% for men.

State‑wise Performance and Social Categories

Uttar Pradesh again led with more than 1.7 lakh successful candidates, while Lakshadweep contributed only 43 qualifiers. The top 17 candidates—all scoring above 705—came from eight states: Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, Tamil Nadu and Telangana. Social‑category breakdown shows 5.12 lakh OBC‑NCL, 2.91 lakh General, 1.6 lakh SC, 95,026 Gen‑EWS and 63,716 ST qualifiers. Additionally, 3,666 PwBD and 303 PwD candidates cleared the exam, which was offered in 13 languages.

Future Outlook

NTA affirmed that the results were declared in time to keep counselling for MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and allied programmes on schedule. In the wake of the leak controversy, the government has decided to shift NEET‑UG from a pen‑and‑paper format to a computer‑based test (CBT) starting in 2027, aiming to strengthen security and fairness.
