Chennai: In a major step toward strengthening mental health infrastructure and innovation in India, The Banyan Academy of Leadership in Mental Health (BALM) hosted a prestigious ceremony on Tuesday to award the BALM-SFL fellowship. The event recognized seven exceptional individuals from five different states across the country.

Sponsored by Sundram Fasteners Limited (SFL), this fellowship is designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical community impact. This year's cohort includes Harsha A.R., Nupur Milind Joshi, Harshit Patel, Adesh Balu Bagul, Nganthoi Tongbram, Rudhresh Kumar, and Swetha U. These fellows are set to work with BALM from April 2026 to March 2027, focusing on either mental health innovation or field immersion.

Redefining Mental Health Intervention

Lakshmi Sankaran, Director of Training at BALM, provided deep insights into the dual nature of the fellowship. She explained that the Community Immersion fellowship will place participants directly at 'The Banyan’s' critical sites, including emergency care, recovery services, and the 'Home Again' initiative. Conversely, the Innovation fellowship is designed to push boundaries, moving beyond traditional talk therapies to explore new modes of communication and support for people in distress within socially disadvantaged contexts.

The innovation fellowship looks at groundbreaking projects, moving beyond talking therapies to explore ways to communicate with people in distress in socially disadvantaged contexts.

The ceremony was graced by Chief Guest M. Mahadevan, Chairman & Managing Director of Advantage Foods Pvt. Ltd. & Hot Breads. Reflecting on his three-decade association with The Banyan, Mahadevan emphasized the profound impact of understanding the suffering of others and the necessity of continuous social engagement.

Why This Matters

BozokMedia analysis shows that while mental health awareness is rising globally, the lack of specialized, field-ready professionals remains a critical bottleneck in developing nations. By integrating students and innovators directly into grassroots recovery services, the BALM-SFL program creates a sustainable pipeline of skilled mental health practitioners capable of navigating complex social landscapes.

The event also saw participation from K.S. Ramesh, Director of Education, Social Action and Administration at BALM, and guest of honour J.S. Gunavathy, Principal of the Madras School of Social Work. Additionally, the BALM-SFL Education Scholarship for vulnerable backgrounds and MSW students was awarded, with approximately 15 students from the Madras School of Social Work receiving support.

Did You Know?: Mental health fellowships like BALM-SFL are crucial for training professionals to work in 'socially disadvantaged contexts' where traditional clinical models often fail.
