After 17 years of gameplay, Minecraft will finally let players sit down with a new craftable cushion. Producer Gustav Höglund revealed 16 colour options and highlighted the building possibilities, while the update arrives amid major Xbox restructuring.
Minecraft is set to introduce a feature that fulfills a basic player desire – to sit – for the first time in its 17‑year history. The upcoming update will add a craftable cushion that can be placed on the ground, offering a genuine sitting experience unlike the makeshift boat, minecart, or animal‑riding tricks used so far.
How to Craft the Cushion
Producer Gustav Höglund explained that cushions are crafted from wool slabs, a material that is itself new to the game. Players can choose from 16 distinct colours, allowing personal flair in interior design or public builds. Once placed, a simple right‑click lets a character sit, turning a decorative block into functional furniture.
Gameplay Implications
Previously, “sitting” was merely an illusion achieved by dropping into a boat or riding a creature. With real cushions, builders can now create lounges, cafés, and role‑play zones that feel authentic. Industry analysts predict a surge in server‑based social events, immersive role‑play scenarios, and even new redstone contraptions that react to a player’s seated state.
Update Amid Xbox’s Organizational Shake‑up
The timing coincides with a turbulent period for Xbox, the franchise’s owner. Mojang, the Swedish studio behind Minecraft, recently faced layoffs, and both Mojang and King (the Candy Crush studio) will now report directly to Xbox CEO Asha Shamra. She described the two studios as Xbox’s “largest” units by monthly active users. Additionally, Minecraft studio head Helen Chiang has been promoted to Chief Operating Officer of Xbox, tasked with unifying operations across the gaming portfolio.
Broader Franchise Outlook
Minecraft has sold hundreds of millions of copies, not counting spin‑offs like Minecraft Dungeons. The sequel, Minecraft Dungeons 2, is slated for a September launch, while the 2025 Minecraft movie was a box‑office hit and a sequel is slated for 2027. The cushion addition, though modest, aligns with these larger expansion plans, promising fresh creative opportunities both inside the blocky world and across its multimedia extensions.
