New Delhi: In a distressing incident that highlights the growing concerns regarding workplace mental health, a 45-year-old government teacher attempted to take his own life by jumping from the Rani Jhansi Flyover on Thursday. The victim, identified as Anand Kumar Saroha, was a mathematics teacher at a Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya under the Directorate of Education.

The Incident and Medical Status

According to police reports, Saroha jumped from a height of approximately 30 feet. Passersby spotted him lying injured on the road around 4:33 PM and immediately alerted the authorities. The impact caused multiple injuries, including fractures in both hands. He was initially rushed to Hindu Rao Hospital and subsequently moved to a specialized facility for advanced treatment. Medical professionals have confirmed that while his injuries are significant, his condition is currently stable and he is out of danger.

A Cry for Help: The Suicide Note

The most chilling aspect of the case is the handwritten note recovered from the scene. In the note, written in Hindi, Saroha expressed his profound distress regarding his professional responsibilities. He stated, "There is excessive work pressure. For the past three to four days, I have felt that my health has been deteriorating. Therefore, I am taking this decision on my own." This note points directly toward the psychological toll of his additional duties.

Beyond his primary role as a mathematics educator, Saroha had been assigned critical administrative duties related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. He was tasked with supervising officers for booth numbers 141-150 in the Sadar Bazaar area. This incident raises urgent questions about the allocation of additional workloads to teaching staff and the lack of institutional support for mental well-being within the education and electoral administrative sectors.
