In a significant development for Kochi's infrastructure, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has officially confirmed that all 1,100 streetlights along the 17-km stretch of Container Road will be commissioned by July 15. This announcement comes as a relief to commuters and transporters, following assurances provided to Hibi Eden, the Member of Parliament from Ernakulam.

Infrastructure and Financial Overview

The Container Road serves as a critical national highway corridor, providing a direct link between the International Container Transhipment Terminal (ICTT) at Vallarpadam and Kalamassery. Despite its strategic importance in logistics, the stretch had long suffered from inadequate lighting, posing severe safety risks during night hours. To address this, the NHAI has executed the installation of lights and essential infrastructure, including transformers, at a total cost of ₹10 crore.

Additionally, to ensure high-visibility illumination at key junctions, a pair of high-mast lights was installed using ₹10 lakh allocated from the MP's local area development fund. According to an official release, all statutory inspections have been successfully completed, and the authority is currently monitoring the final stages of pending electrical works to ensure the deadline is met.

Political Advocacy and Impact

The realization of this project is largely attributed to the persistent follow-up by MP Hibi Eden. He had raised the matter in the Lok Sabha and also took it up directly with Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari. This political intervention accelerated the bureaucratic process, ensuring that the funds were sanctioned and the work was executed on priority.

The commissioning of these lights is expected to drastically reduce accidents and improve the efficiency of freight movement. With the corridor now fully illuminated, the operational capacity of the ICTT is likely to receive a further boost, reinforcing Kochi's position as a key maritime hub in the region.
