In a significant move to bolster railway infrastructure, South Central Railway (SCR) has proposed the establishment of two major coaching depots with integrated maintenance facilities. These facilities are planned at Jukal and Dabilpur on the outskirts of Hyderabad, with an estimated total expenditure of ₹2,866.72 crore.
During a recent meeting with Telangana MPs at Rail Nilayam, SCR General Manager Sanjay Kumar Srivastava informed that the proposals for these mega depots have been forwarded to the Railway Board (RB) for final approval. The Jukal depot is estimated to cost ₹1,459.66 crore, while the Dabilpur facility is expected to cost approximately ₹1,407.06 crore.
Land Acquisition and Infrastructure Expansion
To realize this vision, the railway has requested the Telangana government to allot specific land parcels. The request includes 300 acres at Jukal and 250 acres at Dabilpur for the depots. Furthermore, SCR has sought 325 acres at Nagulapalli for a new passenger terminal near Shankarpalli and an additional 250 acres for the expansion of the existing Cherlapalli terminal.
The massive capital infusion into these depots will significantly enhance the rolling stock maintenance capabilities in the southern region.
Interestingly, the proposal to construct a new railway terminal at Shamshabad, originally part of the MMTS Phase-II project, has been shelved following 'advice' from the State government. Notably, the proposed Jukal depot is situated just a few kilometers from Shamshabad.
MMTS Challenges and Regional Ring Rail
BozokMedia analysis shows that while the infrastructure is expanding, certain operational constraints persist regarding the MMTS expansion. SCR expressed difficulties in extending services to routes like Lingampally-Nagulapalli and Umdanagar-Shadnagar, citing that these fall outside the state-defined suburban limits. However, officials indicated that cost-sharing models with the state government could lead to a reconsideration of these routes.
On a larger scale, the Regional Ring Rail project is also gaining momentum. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the first phase, covering 222.53 km at an estimated cost of ₹11,517.51 crore, is currently under consideration by the authorities.
Why This Matters
The development of these coaching depots is crucial for managing the increasing load of passenger trains in the Hyderabad region. Efficient maintenance facilities will reduce downtime and improve the overall reliability of railway services.
