Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna chaired a meeting on Wednesday to review the management and development works at Malpe fishing harbour. With thousands of fishermen dependent on the port for their livelihood, he warned that any negligence would be unacceptable and demanded swift action from the concerned departments.

Background

Located on the Karnataka coast, Malpe harbour is a vital hub for small‑scale fishers who supply a significant portion of the state’s marine catch. Over recent years, the infrastructure has deteriorated – lighting is poor, safety measures are lacking, and basic sanitation is insufficient – creating hardship for the fishing community.

Current Issues

Suvarna pointed out that the original tender for harbour maintenance has expired, yet no fresh tender has been floated. Promised upgrades such as CCTV installation, adequate street lighting, and regular cleaning remain unimplemented, fueling discontent among the fisherfolk.

Leaders of the Malpe Fishermen’s Association added that land earmarked for fishing activities by the Ports Department is being allocated to private parties without any transparent tender process, a practice that could trigger legal challenges.

Political Response

The MLA demanded that officials finalize the design of a new entrance gate and complete construction before the upcoming fishing season. He also asked for the immediate removal of structures on Ports Department land that impede the widening of National Highway 169A, which connects the harbour to inland markets.

He noted that a toilet facility built by the Fisheries Department at Baputota remains unused due to poor upkeep, and suggested that the local cooperative society take over its maintenance, as recommended by the fishermen’s association.

Way Forward

Suvarna urged the departments to launch an awareness drive about the Prime Minister’s Matsya Sampada Yojana and other central schemes, ensuring that fishermen can benefit from available subsidies and insurance.

The condition of Malpe harbour is a bellwether for Karnataka’s coastal economy. Without prompt corrective measures, the livelihoods of thousands could be jeopardised, potentially leading to broader social unrest along the coast.
