The Kerala Congress (Joseph) faction has outright rejected the proposal to create a new Muvattupuzha district by carving out Thodupuzha from Idukki. Water Resources Minister Mons Joseph stated on Saturday that the issue has no relevance at present.

Congress MLA Mathew Kuzhalnadan recently urged Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan at an event in Muvattupuzha to consider forming a new district comprising parts of Ernakulam, Idukki and Kottayam. Satheesan replied that the request would be examined and a Delimitation Commission would be appointed.

The proposal, however, meets strong resistance from the Kerala Congress (Joseph) faction, which enjoys a solid base in Thodupuzha, currently part of Idukki district. Party leader Mons Joseph warned that removing Thodupuzha would amount to “tearing away the very soul and heart of Idukki district.”

Party chairman P.J. Joseph had also opposed the plan when it was first raised. Mons Joseph recalled that former Muvattupuzha MLA Joseph Vazhackan had previously raised the issue in the Assembly, only for it to be discussed and then abandoned.

While the party does not object to a technical review of the proposal, it insists that such discussions should not be aired publicly. The matter, according to Mons Joseph, must be examined in detail by the UDF leadership and the state‑level UDF committee before any formal stance is taken.

Muvattupuzha is currently part of Ernakulam district, situated on its eastern fringe near Idukki. Kuzhalnadan argues that a dedicated Muvattupuzha district is essential for regional development, as Ernakulam’s funds are heavily skewed toward urban projects, especially in Kochi.
