Hyderabad, long deprived of major international sporting events, is poised to become a central hub under Telangana's newly announced sports policy. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, speaking at the launch of the Gachibowli Sports District and the Young India Physical Education and Sports University (YIPESU), said his dream is to see the city featured whenever India hosts the Olympic Games.

Comprehensive Sports Policy and Roadmap

The state government has introduced the "Telangana Sports Knowledge on Wheels" initiative, a sweeping policy designed to nurture world‑class athletes and position Telangana as a permanent venue for global competitions. The plan includes cash incentives, government jobs, and state‑of‑the‑art training facilities to encourage youth participation in sports.

Young India Physical Education and Sports University (YIPESU)

PT Usha, President of the Indian Olympic Association and former athlete, hailed the university as a watershed moment for India’s sporting culture. YIPESU will consolidate coaching, sports science, sports medicine, para‑sports and research under one roof, producing the next generation of coaches, trainers, sports scientists, referees and administrators.

Historical Gaps and New Direction

Reddy noted that the past two decades saw no major tournaments in Hyderabad; many sports venues were repurposed as wedding halls and entertainment spaces. "Compared with many countries, India still lags in hosting events like the Olympics, largely due to an inconsistent sports policy," he said. To address this, the government aims to set up the Telangana Sports Academy by December 2028.

Future Commitments

The chief minister announced that Telangana will host several prestigious national and international competitions in the coming years, providing local talent with a platform to compete on the world stage. He also reaffirmed the promise of monetary rewards and government postings for medal‑winning athletes, reinforcing the message that success in sport demands total dedication and hard work.

With these initiatives, Telangana is rapidly transforming into a leading sporting destination, and Hyderabad’s Olympic aspirations are shifting from a distant dream to an achievable target.
