Apple has rolled out one of the most significant upgrades to its native Mail application with the launch of iOS 27. Leveraging the company’s proprietary Apple Intelligence platform, the update adds AI‑enhanced search, contextual suggestions and a suite of Siri‑driven actions that transform the app from a simple inbox into a proactive productivity hub.

Relevance‑First Search Engine

Previously, Mail’s search results were largely keyword‑ and recency‑driven. The new engine re‑ranks results based on user intent, highlighting the most relevant messages first. For instance, a query for “Sprouts” will prioritize recent order confirmations over promotional newsletters, making it easier for users to locate critical information without sifting through clutter.

Integrated ‘Ask Siri’ Experience

Apple embeds a long‑press ‘Ask Siri’ shortcut directly in the Mail interface. Users can ask Siri to summarise an email, locate specific details, track a package, retrieve flight information or save attached photos. Follow‑up questions are handled within the Siri app, preserving the conversation for later reference.

Write with Siri and Smart Reply

The new “Write with Siri” assistant appears above the keyboard, offering to compose entire messages, rewrite drafts, suggest alternative tones and even provide grammar corrections. It learns a user’s punctuation habits, tone and style, ensuring AI‑generated content feels natural. Smart Reply has also been refined to generate one‑tap responses that mirror the user’s personal writing style.

Call Context and Contextual Suggestions

“Call Context” bridges the Mail and Phone apps. When dialing a business, the Phone app surfaces relevant email data—reservation numbers, order details, or tracking IDs—directly on the call screen. This feature operates entirely on‑device, preserving privacy. Additionally, contextual suggestions now extend to third‑party apps, allowing quick actions such as adding flight confirmations to Calendar, opening map links in Maps, or viewing package details in Wallet.

Performance tweaks accompany the new features: faster email loading, more reliable search indexing, and synchronized unread badge counts across iPhone and Mac. While the AI‑powered components require newer iPhone models, the core search improvements are available to all iOS 27 devices. Apple notes that Siri’s AI will initially be unavailable in the EU and China, and contextual suggestions launch in English only.
