In a landmark development for the state's educational landscape, the latest Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2.0 released by the Ministry of Education shows Bihar making significant strides in academic proficiency and social equity. Remarkably, the state has outperformed several historically high-performing states, including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh, in key learning outcome indicators.

A Leap in Equity and Access

For the 2025-26 academic year, Bihar secured 564.8 points out of 1,000, climbing from its previous score of 507. The state has been placed in the 'Akanshi-1' grade. One of the most impressive highlights of the report is Bihar's performance in the 'Equity' domain, where it earned an 'Uttam-1' grade with 221.5 out of 260 points. This indicates a successful narrowing of the educational gap between genders, rural-urban divides, and various socio-economic categories.

The Infrastructure Paradox

Despite the academic progress, the report exposes a stark reality regarding the physical state of Bihar's schools. In the 'Infrastructure and Facilities' category, Bihar scored a meager 64.8 out of 190 points, placing it near the bottom of the national spectrum. The lack of ICT labs, smart classrooms, clean drinking water, and specialized facilities for Children with Special Needs (CWSN) remains a massive hurdle in transforming the state's education system into a modern one.

Government Strategy and Outlook

Bihar's Education Minister, Mithilesh Tiwari, acknowledged the dual nature of the report, noting that while the improvements in learning outcomes are heartening, the administration is fully aware of the governance and infrastructure challenges. He emphasized that the state plans to adopt best practices from other states to overhaul dilapidated classrooms and upgrade teaching methodologies. The central government continues to support these efforts through the Samagra Shiksha Scheme.
