Experts warn that the dry spell will boost whitefly infestations in coconut groves and increase nut shedding in arecanut plantations, posing a serious challenge for farmers and the state's agricultural economy.
Recent data from the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) shows a 29% rainfall deficit across the coastal belt. While the monsoon clouds have thickened in early July, the shortfall continues to hamper paddy sowing and raises alarms for two cash crops—coconut and arecanut—that dominate the region’s agrarian landscape.
Rainfall Shortfall and Pest Surge
Dr. K. Balachandra Hebbar, director of the ICAR‑Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI) in Kasaragod, explained that reduced moisture and rising temperatures create ideal conditions for the whitefly to proliferate on coconut palms. The insect’s rapid breeding can lead to severe leaf damage, reduced nut formation and ultimately lower yields. In districts such as Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Tumakuru, Mandya, Ramanagara and Mysuru, the threat of black‑headed caterpillars is also expected to intensify.
Impact on Arecanut (Betel Nut)
Arecanut orchards have traditionally suffered from “kole roga” (fruit‑rot disease) during periods of heavy rain. Ironically, the current deficit may spare the trees from rot, but it brings a new problem: increased nut shedding. Hebbar warned that dry conditions trigger premature nut drop, which can cut production by a significant margin, compounding the losses already inflicted by yellow leaf disease and leaf‑spot infections.
Government Response and Agricultural Outlook
The CPCRI has already briefed the Karnataka Horticulture Department on preventive measures, ranging from targeted pesticide applications to moisture‑conserving agronomic practices. Meanwhile, the state’s agriculture ministry set ambitious paddy‑sowing targets—10,000 hectares in Dakshina Kannada—but only 686 hectares (6.86%) have been planted so far. In Udupi, 10,300 hectares out of a 37,000‑hectare goal have been sown, while Uttara Kannada reports a 39% sowing rate.

Environmental activist Dinesh Holla cautioned that reduced rainfall will deplete Shola forest catchments, causing streams to run dry well before winter. This water scarcity is likely to push wildlife into human settlements, escalating human‑wildlife conflicts. Additionally, hydro‑electric generation is expected to dip, further straining Karnataka’s power grid.
