Narayana Health founder Dr Devi Shetty has announced the establishment of a new smart hospital in Bengaluru, which will be India's first nurse-led hospital. The hospital will be managed operationally by nurses, with the aim of preparing them to become future hospital CEOs. Dr Shetty said that the hospital will have a very different organizational structure, with nurses taking care of patients along with doctors and technicians, and handling the entire operational management and governance of the hospital. The hospital is looking to recruit 25 nurses who want to expand their careers beyond bedside care and develop management skills. Selected nurses will continue to receive their regular clinical salary while also earning additional monthly management incentives. They will also be enrolled in an executive hospital administration programme at Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, with the entire cost sponsored by Narayana Health. Dr Shetty said that the initiative aims to change the long-standing perception of nurses as caregivers alone by creating a pathway into executive leadership. The hospital is looking for nurses who are ready to become future healthcare leaders. If successful, the initiative could become one of the first structured attempts in India to prepare nurses for top leadership positions in hospital administrations, which have largely been occupied by doctors, administrators or management professionals.
