On Monday evening, newborn’s family was told to shift the baby to another facility because the hospital lacked a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) bed. Upset, they called on Mhatre, who arrived with supporters. A video that went viral shows the corporator slapping Dr. Salunkhe and striking Dr. Baviskar’s hand inside the hospital premises. The footage ignited immediate condemnation on social media and among medical professionals.

After being arrested late Wednesday, Mhatre complained of chest pain and was admitted to Thane District Civil Hospital. A Kalyan court ordered his immediate production once medically fit, while three of his aides and a female supporter were also detained under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including assault on a public servant and criminal intimidation.
