Delhi’s Health Minister Pankaj Singh formally opened a dedicated geriatric clinic at Indira Gandhi Hospital in Dwarka on Monday. Designed specifically for patients aged 60 and above, the clinic offers a single‑point solution for expert consultations, treatment plans and continuous follow‑up, eliminating the need for multiple hospital visits.

Inauguration Highlights and Minister’s Remarks

During the ceremony, Singh stated, “This clinic is a decisive step toward providing our senior citizens with organized, convenient and effective healthcare. A specialised team will address age‑related conditions ranging from hypertension to dementia, all under one roof.” He underscored the Delhi government’s broader commitment to equitable health services across all age groups.

Why a Geriatric Clinic is Needed

India’s senior population is projected to cross 150 million by 2025, according to the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO). With rising life expectancy comes a surge in chronic ailments such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, osteoarthritis and neuro‑degenerative disorders. A focused geriatric centre not only facilitates early diagnosis but also streamlines long‑term management, reducing both patient burden and systemic costs.

Benefits for the Elderly

The clinic houses orthopaedists, cardiologists, neurologists and physiotherapists, supported by an electronic medical record (EMR) system that consolidates patient histories for accurate, coordinated care. A dedicated ambulance unit ensures rapid response during emergencies, while on‑site diagnostic tools—X‑ray, ultrasound and laboratory services—speed up treatment decisions.

Future Expansion Plans

Presented as a pilot, the Dwarka facility is expected to serve as a template for similar units across Delhi. Singh announced plans to replicate the model in five more hospitals within the next two years, aiming to raise overall senior‑citizen health outcomes while easing fiscal pressures on the public health system.
