In Lucknow, police recovered approximately ₹1.5 lakh in cash, gold ornaments and a car during raids on three accused in the Ayodhya donation theft case. Fifteen relatives' bank accounts have also been frozen as investigators trace the illicit money trail.
Lucknow: Authorities in Uttar Pradesh conducted extensive searches at the residences of three suspects linked to the high‑profile Ram Temple donation theft. The raids yielded roughly ₹1.5 lakh in cash, several pieces of gold jewellery – including earrings and pendants – and a motor vehicle.
Details of the Search Operations
First, police escorted Anukalp Mishra to his home at around 9 a.m. and conducted a 20‑minute search. Similar operations were carried out at the homes of Lavkush Mishra and Karunesh Pandey. Family members were interrogated, and a detailed inventory of seized items was compiled. While the exact cash figure was not disclosed officially, sources estimate it at about ₹1.5 lakh.
Bank Account Freezes
Investigators discovered a series of transactions in the accounts of the accused’s relatives that did not match their known sources of income. Consequently, 15 accounts have been frozen while forensic accountants trace the movement of the stolen donations.
Accused Statements
During questioning, Anukalp claimed that he and co‑accused Avinash had invested the misappropriated funds in the stock market, lent money at interest to acquaintances, and subsequently routed the proceeds through relatives and close associates before depositing the money back into their own accounts to conceal the trail. Police are currently verifying these assertions.
Broader Investigation and Potential Impact
To date, eight individuals have been arrested in connection with the alleged donation embezzlement. The investigative team is scrutinising financial records, bank statements, investment portfolios, and asset ownership to gauge the scale of the fraud and identify any wider network involved.
If the allegations are substantiated, the case could undermine public confidence in charitable contributions toward religious projects and spark calls for greater transparency in donation handling. Experts warn that large‑scale financial misconduct erodes trust, potentially discouraging future philanthropy.
Policy makers may need to consider stricter oversight mechanisms, including digital tracking of donations and mandatory public disclosures, to safeguard the integrity of such high‑visibility fundraising efforts.
