In a significant move to address the long-standing grievances of the island community, Lakshadweep Lok Sabha MP Muhammed Hamdullah Sayeed has formally reached out to Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan. Highlighting the deep-rooted socio-cultural ties between the two regions, the MP emphasized that Kerala remains a vital lifeline for the people of Lakshadweep, particularly regarding healthcare and logistics.

Addressing the Healthcare Crisis

The MP pointed out that residents of the archipelago frequently travel to Kerala for advanced medical treatments, including oncology, cardiology, and neurology, primarily at government institutions in Ernakulam, Kottayam, and Kozhikode. To alleviate the financial and logistical hardships faced by these patients, Mr. Sayeed has proposed the establishment of a dedicated nodal facilitation centre at these hospitals. This center would assist with admissions, referrals, and coordination, ensuring that islanders receive timely and affordable care.

Reviving Maritime Connectivity

Connectivity remains a critical bottleneck for the islands. Mr. Sayeed highlighted the disruption caused by the cessation of the Beypore–Lakshadweep passenger vessel service, which has disproportionately affected students, elderly citizens, and patients. He urged the Kerala government to coordinate with the Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways to strengthen port infrastructure at Beypore. Improved vessel services are essential not only for passenger movement but also for the seamless transport of essential commodities and commercial cargo.

Combating Narcotics and Enhancing Security

A major concern raised in the communication is the rising threat of drug trafficking via maritime routes. Praising Kerala's successful anti-narcotics initiative, 'Operation Toofan', the MP suggested that its scope be extended to Lakshadweep. He called for enhanced intelligence-sharing between the Kerala Police, Coastal Police, and Port Authorities to dismantle smuggling networks that threaten the social fabric of the islands. Furthermore, he suggested integrating Lakshadweep into Kerala's proposed port-to-port connectivity initiative to boost regional trade and tourism.
