The ‘Safe Footpath’ initiative in Bengaluru has accelerated the removal of commercial obstructions from major arterial roads. Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar emphasized that the campaign is designed to relocate street vendors to officially notified vending zones, not to evict them. This decision follows consultations with opposition legislators and aligns with a Supreme Court ruling on pedestrian safety.

Vendor Applications and Subsidies

Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda reported that roughly 37,000 vendors have applied for vending carts, while 60,000 individuals seek vending machines. The government has earmarked ₹50‑60 crore for this effort, with subsidies earmarked for those in need.

Progress in Footpath Clearance

Day two of the citywide drive saw the East City Corporation clear 8.8 km of footpaths, and the Central City Corporation remove encroachments along 8.55 km covering 11 roads. The Bengaluru North City Corporation cleared another 12.7 km, eliminating 25 shops, 124 push‑carts, 59 canopies, 130 unauthorized advertisement boards, four temporary structures, and 18 tonnes of debris.

Upcoming Clean‑Up Campaigns

Gowda has directed officials to launch a citywide operation from July 10 to remove abandoned roadside vehicles in coordination with traffic police. A subsequent campaign starting July 15 will focus on clearing construction debris and overgrown vegetation.
