At a ceremony in Yadgir on Saturday, Suresh Sajjan, the newly‑elected state president of the Ganiga Community Organisation, called on Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar to release ₹500 crore for the Karnataka Ganiga Development Corporation (KGDC). The appeal came after Sajjan was felicitated for his new leadership role.

Historical Context

The Ganiga community is one of the prominent Veerashaiva Lingayat groups in Karnataka, historically lagging behind other sub‑communities in terms of economic prosperity. KGDC was created by former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai in 2022 with the explicit purpose of channeling targeted development schemes for Ganiga families. However, the corporation has struggled to secure sufficient funding, limiting its ability to launch large‑scale projects.

Economic and Social Demands

“The community’s economic condition remains weak, and the state should allocate ₹500 crore to the corporation to launch concrete development programmes,” Sajjan said. He also urged families to prioritize education, stating that “education can transform children into responsible citizens and lift the community to new heights.”

New Initiatives and Future Plans

During the event, Sajjan disclosed discussions with a private insurance firm to introduce accidental death benefits for Ganiga households. A digital insurance card will be issued to each family, simplifying claim processes. Additionally, MLA Channareddy Patil Tunnur, who inaugurated the programme, pledged a site for a Ganiga Bhavan in Yadgir, which will serve as a community hub.
