Chandigarh – Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Monday regularised the services of 516 daily‑wage employees of the Forest Department, putting an end to years of uncertainty about their future. During the ceremony, the CM handed out official appointment letters and announced the restoration of long‑pending promotions for 237 forest officers and staff.

Abolition of Contractor System and Merit‑Based Recruitment

Mann’s administration has completely done away with the contractor model, ensuring that all forest workers now enjoy direct government employment. He highlighted that more than 68,268 positions have already been allocated to Punjab’s youth solely on the basis of merit, reinforcing the vision of a “Rangla Punjab.” This shift directly challenges the previous governments’ neglect of contractual staff.

Job Security and Policy Guarantees

The Chief Minister reiterated that the historic policy introduced on May 16, 2023 guarantees service security until the age of 58, after which employees will retire under the normal pension scheme. A January 2024 finance department circular has also defined a transparent salary structure, setting minimum educational qualifications at Class VIII for Group D staff and Class X for higher grades.

Contribution to Punjab’s Green Cover

Mann emphasised that Forest Department personnel are crucial to expanding Punjab’s green cover. “I have never signed a file that caused any employee or the state financial loss,” he said, underscoring his commitment to the welfare of contractual workers. He also announced renewed efforts to rejuvenate forest rest houses across the state.
