Visakhapatnam is gearing up for the annual Sri Jagannath Rath Yatra scheduled for July 16, with both ISKCON Visakhapatnam and the Sri Jagannath Swamy Temple on Town Kotha Road arranging distinct yet equally grand processions. The festivities blend religious devotion with cultural extravaganza, positioning the city as a focal point of Andhra Pradesh’s festive calendar.

Procession Route and Logistics

ISKCON Visakhapatnam will commence its Rath Yatra at 4 p.m., deploying three 37‑foot chariots that carry the deities of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra. The procession will start from the Mahatma Gandhi statue opposite the GVMC office, weaving through the LIC Building, Ambedkar statue, Dabagardens, Jagadamba Junction, and Waltair Main Road, before culminating at Gurajada Kalakshetram, Siripuram.

Cultural Participation and Volunteer Force

The organizers have enlisted cultural troupes from Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal, alongside traditional kirtan and kolatam groups. Around 500 student volunteers are expected to assist, ensuring smooth crowd management and logistical support. During the march, devotees will receive prasadam, and at Gurajada Kalakshetram, a series of cultural programmes, the offering of 501 food preparations to the deities, and a maha‑sandhya arati will be performed.

Sri Jagannath Swamy Temple’s Parallel Celebration

The temple’s trust board, led by Chairman Surada Raj Kumar and Executive Officer T. Rajagopal Reddy, announced that its Rath Yatra will begin at 5 p.m. on July 16, proceeding from the temple to Turner Choultry. Visakhapatnam South MLA Ch. Vamsi Krishna Srinivas is slated to flag off the procession. On July 15, the temple will conduct the Shanti Kalyanam of Lord Jagannath and Goddess Subhadra, followed by Dasavatara alankarams from July 17‑25 at Turner Choultry Kalyana Mandapam, and a return Rath Yatra on July 26.

Food, Annadanam and Evening Programs

Annadanam—free meals for devotees—will be organized every afternoon throughout the festival, while cultural programmes will light up each evening, reinforcing the event’s community‑centric spirit. The temple also plans to distribute prasadam during the procession, fostering a sense of shared devotion.

Historically, the Jagannath Rath Yatra traces its roots to the 12th‑century Puri tradition in Odisha, where the deity’s chariot procession became a symbol of divine presence and communal harmony. Over the centuries, the pilgrimage has spread across India, adapting to regional customs while preserving its core spiritual significance. In Visakhapatnam, the 2026 edition not only underscores religious reverence but also showcases the city’s ability to blend tradition with contemporary civic participation, especially through the involvement of young volunteers.
