Meta is set to begin manufacturing its custom AI chip, code-named 'Iris,' this September as part of a massive infrastructure expansion aimed at doubling its computing capacity.

In a decisive move to secure its future in the generative AI era, Meta Platforms is preparing to commence production of its proprietary artificial intelligence chip starting this September. According to an internal memo, the company is pivoting toward in-house silicon to fuel its next generation of AI services across platforms like Facebook and Instagram.

The 'Iris' Project and Strategic Partnerships

The custom-designed chip, codenamed 'Iris', is a cornerstone of Meta's four-generation Meta Training and Inference Accelerators (MTIA) roadmap. To bring this vision to life, Meta is collaborating with Broadcom for design expertise and TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co) for high-end manufacturing. This vertical integration is designed to mitigate the astronomical costs associated with purchasing high-end GPUs from industry leaders like Nvidia and AMD.

Massive Infrastructure Scaling

The push for custom silicon coincides with a gargantuan expansion of Meta's data center capabilities. The tech giant aims to scale its computing infrastructure to a staggering 14 gigawatts by 2027. To support this, Meta is projected to invest approximately $145 billion in AI infrastructure this year alone. Unlike its competitors who typically release hardware at yearly intervals, Meta intends to maintain a rapid cadence, launching a new AI processor roughly every six months through 2027.

Combating 'Chipflation' and Supply Chain Risks

As the global race for AI dominance intensifies, the industry faces the growing threat of 'Chipflation'—a phenomenon where surging demand for memory and logic chips drives up macroeconomic costs. To insulate itself from supply volatility, Meta has locked in multi-year supply agreements with key players including Samsung Electronics for memory, Sandisk for flash storage, and Sumitomo Electric for fiber-optic components. This proactive supply chain management is critical as Meta attempts to decouple itself from third-party hardware constraints and achieve true AI autonomy.
