The Centre has been urged to block the auctions of three prized Chandigarh heritage items, including a Pierre Jeanneret desk and chair and a rare hanging armchair, which are to be sold in the US and Spain. The items are estimated to be worth between $6,000 and $8,000 and €12,000-14,000, respectively. Chandigarh-based advocate Ajay Jagga has written to the Ministry of External Affairs, the Ministry of Culture, the Punjab governor-cum-Chandigarh administrator, and the Chandigarh administration, urging them to take urgent diplomatic and legal measures to stop the auctions and facilitate the return of these heritage objects to India. Jagga argued that the sale of these heritage items would result in the permanent loss of India's national heritage and weaken the authenticity of one of India's most significant UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
