Tirupati – ‘City of Tanks and Lakes’ has officially entered the Detailed Project Report (DPR) stage. Championed by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, the Tirupati Municipal Corporation (TMC) and the Tirupati Urban Development Authority (TUDA) have adopted an integrated approach to restore 23 key water bodies and fortify storm‑water management.

Historically, Tirupati’s landscape was sustained by a dense network of lakes, tanks, feeder canals and natural drainage courses that moderated floods, recharged groundwater and maintained ecological balance. Rapid urbanisation, siltation, shrinking water bodies, blockage of natural channels, illegal encroachments and the discharge of sewage have severely eroded this natural resilience.
Integrated Water‑Management Framework
During a TUDA‑convened panel, TMC Commissioner Sarada Devi unveiled a concept note titled ‘Climate‑Resilient Integrated Water Management’. The document outlines a roadmap to reconnect fragmented water bodies, clear obstructed channels and apply scientific hydrological modeling for long‑term sustainability.
DPR Preparation and International Funding
TUDA Secretary N. V. Sreekanth Babu announced that a comprehensive DPR will be drafted for submission to Germany’s KfW Development Bank, with technical assistance from ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability. A team led by renowned hydrologist Ramamohan Rao from ICLEI is providing scientific guidance, ensuring the plan meets global best‑practice standards.
