Municipal Commissioner Challa Obulesu visited shops in Kurnool’s Old Bus Stand area on Monday, urging traders and the public to completely stop using single‑use plastic. The directive aligns with the corporation’s aggressive stance on curbing environmental damage and protecting public health.

Scale of Enforcement

Obulesu disclosed that 201 special inspection raids have been carried out so far this year, leading to the confiscation of more than 250 kilograms of banned plastic. Violators have been collectively fined ₹1,95,150, signalling a firm deterrent against future non‑compliance.

Collective Social Responsibility

The commissioner framed environmental protection as a shared societal duty, recommending cloth, jute, or paper bags as viable substitutes for plastic. He also mandated that every commercial establishment display a dustbin at its entrance and ensure waste is deposited there rather than littered on the streets.

Role of Traders in City Cleanliness

Obulesu warned that any merchant found flouting the regulations would face legal action. “Each trader must contribute to keeping the city clean,” he asserted, underscoring the link between business practices and urban hygiene.

Operational Checks and Future Direction

Following the market visits, the commissioner inspected sanitation operations on Sunkesula Road and N.R. Peta, issuing directives to field officers. He later toured the ‘Anna Canteen’ at the government hospital to review service standards. Looking ahead, the corporation plans to intensify awareness campaigns and maintain continuous monitoring to eradicate single‑use plastic from Kurnool’s streets.
