Ride‑hailing giants such as Uber and Rapido launched bike‑taxi services in Kochi only a few months ago, encouraging private bike owners to earn extra income. However, these vehicles operate without the mandatory commercial licence, placing both drivers and passengers outside the legal safety net.

Using a privately registered vehicle for commercial transport violates the Motor Vehicles Act and nullifies any insurance policy that would otherwise cover accident compensation. Consequently, victims like Krishna face massive out‑of‑pocket expenses – she has already spent over ₹20 lakh on medical treatment, with no compensation from the service provider.

Government Response

Transport Commissioner C. Nagaraju announced a crackdown on illegal bike taxis, stating that a special drive had already been conducted and that offending licences would be cancelled. This decisive step aims to curb unlicensed operations and protect commuters.

Union Stance

Manu, a local rider from Nedumbassery, earns roughly ₹1,000 for a seven‑hour shift, reflecting the economic lure for many. Yet, the Ernakulam Autorickshaw Drivers Association (CITU), led by district president M.B. Samanthabhadran, is mobilising a joint agitation against these illegal services, emphasizing the heightened risk to passengers.
