The alleged assault on doctors and nurses at a civic hospital in Dombivli has escalated into a major statewide confrontation between the medical fraternity and the Maharashtra government. The incident, which has sent shockwaves through the healthcare sector, centered around the alleged attack by supporters of Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre. Following the arrest of three of his associates, Mhatre surrendered before the Thane police, though he was subsequently admitted to Thane Civil Hospital citing health ailments.

Mobilization of Medical Professionals

In response to the violence, the Maharashtra State Association of Resident Doctors (Central MARD) has announced that resident doctors in all government medical colleges and hospitals across the state will wear black ribbons on Thursday. This symbolic protest is intended to demand long-term systemic measures to curb the rising tide of violence against healthcare workers while maintaining essential medical services.

The Maharashtra Nurses Association has also joined the fray, announcing a three-day 'black-ribbon' protest starting July 10. The association has issued a stern warning: if concrete actions and security guarantees are not provided by July 13, the agitation will intensify into an indefinite strike, potentially crippling public healthcare services in the state.

Demands for Legislative and Security Reforms

Medical organizations, including the BMC MARD, have submitted memoranda to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, seeking his immediate intervention. They are demanding a 'zero-tolerance policy' regarding hospital violence and the implementation of strict penalties under the Maharashtra Medicare Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Dr. Manisha Shinde, President of the Nurses Association, highlighted the psychological toll on staff, stating that the lack of fear of law among aggressors is emboldening criminals. She emphasized that healthcare workers are already struggling with overwhelming patient loads and chronic understaffing, making such physical assaults an unacceptable threat to their dignity and safety.
