In a major crackdown on corruption, the Uttar Pradesh Vigilance Establishment has unearthed a massive web of illicit wealth belonging to former Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO) Lalit Kumar. Following a search warrant obtained from the court, investigators conducted intensive raids at his residence in the Chandralok Colony area of Aliganj, Lucknow, leading to the seizure of assets valued at approximately ₹35 crore.

Massive Cash and Precious Metal Seizure

The raid yielded staggering amounts of liquid assets and valuables. Officials recovered approximately ₹1.62 crore in cash, which had been meticulously hidden in various packets throughout the house. Furthermore, the vigilance team seized 13 kilograms of gold (in the form of bars, bricks, and jewelry) and 9 kilograms of silver. The market value of these precious metals alone is estimated to be around ₹20 crore, leaving even the seasoned investigators in awe.

Real Estate Empire Across Multiple Districts

Beyond the immediate cash and jewelry, the investigation revealed an extensive portfolio of immovable properties. Documents recovered from the premises indicate significant investments in Lucknow, Barabanki, and Raebareli, including residential plots and agricultural land. Additionally, the former officer had booked high-end flats in Lucknow and Noida. The estimated value of these real estate holdings is approximately ₹13 crore. The raid also saw the seizure of a Toyota Innova, a Hyundai i20, and a revolver.

A Pattern of Systemic Corruption

Lalit Kumar's history of disproportionate assets dates back to his posting in Kanpur, where he was accused of spending significantly more than his legal income. Despite this, he was later posted as the ARTO in Agra, where further allegations of wealth accumulation surfaced during his two-year tenure. The investigation is now looking into his various investments in mutual funds, fixed deposits, and post office schemes, which amount to over ₹1 crore.

Recognition for the Vigilance Team

Recognizing the scale and success of this operation, the Director General of Police (DGP) and the Director of the Vigilance Establishment have announced a ₹1 lakh cash reward for the Lucknow sector team. The seized assets are currently being verified, and rigorous legal proceedings are expected to follow as the probe continues into his broader network of benami properties.
