On Friday morning at around 5:30 a.m., a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) bus careened into a residential building in Thamaraipakkam village, near Arcot in the Ranipet district. The sudden impact caused the house and an adjoining shop to collapse, resulting in twelve injuries, including the bus driver, his assistant, and several passengers.

What led to the crash?

According to the Ranipet police report, the bus was traveling from Arani towards Chennai on the Chittoor‑Cuddalore Highway when a two‑wheeler rider unexpectedly cut across the lane. The 48‑year‑old driver, identified as R. Ashok Kumar, attempted to brake but lost control, steering the massive vehicle into the nearby house located close to a village bus stop.

Immediate response and medical care

The dwelling was unoccupied at the time; the family was seated in the backyard. Bystanders and other motorists rushed to the scene, pulling the injured from the wreckage and transporting them to the Government Taluk Hospital in Arani for emergency treatment. Those with serious injuries were later shifted to a larger tertiary care centre.

Police investigation

Thimiri police registered an FIR and launched a forensic examination of the crash site. Preliminary findings point to the sudden maneuver of the two‑wheeler as the trigger, but investigators are also scrutinising the driver’s reaction time, the bus’s braking system, and adherence to speed limits. If negligence is established, the driver could face legal action under the Motor Vehicles Act.
