Six days after a devastating landslide struck the under-construction twin tunnel project connecting Wayanad and Kozhikode, rescue operations remain highly active. The primary focus of the multi-agency task force is to locate Vikram Rana, a construction manager hailing from Himachal Pradesh, who remains the sole unaccounted individual since the disaster on July 7, which has claimed seven lives so far.

Extensive Search Operations Along the Meenachil River

According to Kerala Agriculture Minister T Siddique, a large-scale search is underway along the Meenachil river basin. The operation involves the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Special Operations Group (SOG), Fire and Rescue Services, the Rapid Response Team, the Forest Department, and local youth volunteer organizations. The entire search zone, extending from the landslide epicenter to the downstream stretches of the river, has been divided into multiple sectors to ensure a meticulous search of both riverbanks.

To optimize the search efforts, rescue teams are analyzing CCTV footage and video recordings captured just before the incident. Based on these visual inputs and testimonies from surviving workers, specific high-probability zones have been identified. One such critical area is an upstream pond where a significant amount of iron rods and construction debris accumulated post-landslide. Workers reported that Rana was last seen near this location before the torrent of mud and rock swept through the site.

Experts argue that heavy drilling and excavation in ecologically sensitive zones can destabilize the topsoil, drastically increasing the risk of catastrophic slope failures.
