Thiruvananthapuram – On July 9, 2026, Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan addressed a gathering of the state’s MPs, urging them to serve as “true ambassadors” of Kerala in Delhi. The meeting, held a day before the Monsoon session of Parliament, stressed the importance of articulating Kerala’s developmental needs and constituency‑specific concerns to Union ministers and senior officials both inside and outside the legislature.

Kerala’s Port‑City Vision

Satheesan outlined an ambitious long‑term plan to transform Kerala into a global port‑city. The strategy hinges on fully exploiting the state’s maritime assets – two international ports, a container terminal, 17 minor ports, and a 600‑km coastline. Complementing this, the government has drafted around 27 aviation projects aimed at integrating the four international airports and attracting private investment into the aviation sector.

Urgent Need for Central Financial Support

Realising these projects, the chief minister argued, requires a substantial increase in central assistance – higher budgetary allocations and Kerala’s rightful share of central taxes. With central grants shrinking and a borrowing cap imposed by the centre, the state is grappling with a severe fiscal crunch. Kerala has already contributed over ₹5,000 crore to national highway construction and is poised to raise more than ₹3,000 crore for an outer‑ring‑road project that will boost port connectivity in Thiruvananthapuram.

Focus on Infrastructure Projects

Satheesan pressed MPs to champion several flagship rail projects, including the Angamaly‑Sabari line, Kanhangad‑Panathur‑Kaniyur corridor, Thalassery‑Mysuru link, and Nilambur‑Nanjangud route. He also highlighted the need for accelerated national‑highway work, enhanced port‑rail integration, integrated maritime logistics, airport cargo facilities, and airport expansion, all of which demand decisive central backing.

Strengthening Coordination Mechanisms

To streamline advocacy, the chief minister announced the creation of a robust liaison mechanism in Delhi that will facilitate real‑time communication between MPs and the state government. Dedicated meetings on national‑highway and railway proposals will be convened, and a dashboard in the Chief Minister’s Office will keep MPs updated on project progress.

The session also noted the absence of certain MPs, such as K.C. Venugopal and Jose K. Mani, underscoring the need for full participation to present a united front for Kerala’s interests at the centre.
