New Delhi – Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal announced on Sunday that the sprawling Central Vista redevelopment zone will henceforth be referred to as the “Kartavya Bhawan Complex” or “Kartavya Bhawan Area”. The decision, delivered at the Foundation Day of the Central Public Works Department, marks a symbolic shift in how India’s capital is presented to its citizens and the world.

Background of the Renaming

The Central Vista project, launched in 2022 under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to replace aging colonial-era structures with modern ministries and public spaces. In the same year, the historic Rajpath was renamed “Kartavya Path” to shed colonial connotations and emphasize citizens’ duties. Extending that narrative, “Kartavya Bhawan” now crowns the new government edifices, embedding the ethos of service into the very nomenclature of the capital.

Current Status of the Project

Under the “Common Central Secretariat” plan, ten new buildings are slated for construction across the precinct. Three of these have already been completed and are operational, housing key ministries. The remaining structures are under various stages of development and will collectively be known as the Kartavya Bhawan Area. Minister Lal stressed, “These new buildings have already entered the annals of our nation’s history, much like the century‑old monuments that continue to be revered today.”

During his remarks, the minister also unveiled a new transfer policy for Central Public Works Department staff, allowing employees to request postings at locations of their choice. While acknowledging a surge in transfer requests, he urged officials to balance personal preferences with the greater good of the nation’s administrative efficiency.
