Veteran Islamic scholar Panakkad Sayyid Nasar Abdul Hayya Shihabuddin Thangal Ba-Alavi from Kerala has been officially named the new Khazi of Dakshina Kannada district. The announcement follows the death of the former Khazi, Thwaka Ahmed Musliyar, who passed away in Mangalore on June 23.

Appointment Procedure

The decision was announced on Saturday by Yenepoya Abdullah Kunhi, president of the managing committee of Zeenath Baksh Central Juma Masjid and Eidgah Masjid in Mangalore. A convened meeting of representatives from several local mosques, under the same committee’s leadership, formally ratified the appointment. Thangal expressed his willingness to assume the responsibilities, instantly garnering confidence among community members.

A Khazi occupies a pivotal position in Islamic tradition, primarily overseeing Shariah‑based matters such as issuing Fatwas, conducting marriages, and handling other religious rites.
