The body of an 18-year-old student from Hyderabad, Manideep Reddy, who went missing in Finland in May this year, has been recovered from the sea in Helsinki. The tragic news was conveyed to the grieving family by the Indian Embassy in Finland on Friday, July 10, 2026. Manideep was pursuing a Bachelor’s Programme in Software and Systems Engineering at the Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (LUT University), Lahti Campus, and resided at Ritaniemenkatu, Lahti.

Suspicious Circumstances & Legal Allegations

The family's legal counsel, KLB Kumar, has strongly rejected the possibility of a natural death, terming the incident highly suspicious. According to Kumar, Manideep was last seen alive at a shopping mall in Helsinki on May 5. The lawyer alleged that the Finnish government is intentionally suppressing crucial facts and attempting to cover up the investigation. He criticized the local authorities for their lack of transparency and failure to conduct a rigorous forensic inquiry.

Communication Blackout and Family's Ordeal

The student's father, Gujja Muthyam Reddy, shared that a complaint was initially lodged by one of Manideep's friends from Delhi. However, after May 29, all communication between the family and the Finnish police completely ceased. Despite repeated emails, phone calls, and diplomatic inquiries, the authorities in Finland refused to provide updates on the investigation, leaving the family in deep agony and apprehension for over two months.

Diplomatic Context and Student Safety Abroad

This tragic incident once again highlights the growing vulnerability of Indian students pursuing higher education abroad. In recent years, there has been a concerning rise in reports of suspicious deaths, assaults, and disappearances of Indian students globally. The Telangana High Court has already issued notices to both the Central and State governments regarding the case, urging immediate diplomatic intervention to facilitate the parents' travel to Finland and ensure a transparent, joint investigation.
