In the midst of an intensifying power struggle, the Congress high command has officially decided that the Punjab unit will see no change in its top leadership. State in‑charge Bhupesh Baghel told reporters on Wednesday that Amarinder Singh Raja Warring will continue as Punjab Congress president, and that senior party figures are working through dialogue to settle the lingering disputes.

Punjab Congress is gearing up for the 2027 state assembly elections, a contest that has become increasingly fraught with internal discord. Over the past few months, factions led by former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi—now a Congress MP—have clamoured for a meeting with the party’s central leadership, alleging marginalisation after the recent organisational revamp.

Baghel’s Explicit Statement

Addressing the press, Baghel said, “When the party high command takes a decision, it is not changed.” He added that repeatedly altering leadership decisions is “not a child’s play.” By reaffirming Warring’s position, Baghel signalled that the party prefers stability over impulsive reshuffles, especially as the election calendar looms.

Key Players and Their Moves

On July 1, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) restructured the Punjab unit, retaining Warring as president while appointing Channi to head the campaign committee. Channi, reportedly aggrieved by the reshuffle, has been pressing for a direct audience with the high command. Baghel indicated that a meeting with Channi is imminent.

Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla, after meeting Channi, posted on X that senior leaders are “making sincere efforts to resolve the ongoing issues through dialogue and strengthen unity in the interest of Punjab and the party.” This public endorsement underscores a concerted effort to portray a united front.

Baghel convened a comprehensive session at the Punjab Congress Bhawan, focusing on grassroots mobilisation, coordination with workers, and acceleration of election preparations.
